<title>The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum Celebrates Haitian Heritage Month</title>

<description>The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum Celebrates Haitian Heritage Month with Dynamic Photographic Exhibit

Haitian Community Arts: Images by Iris PhotoCollective on Display

April 7 through June 30, 2008

In celebration of Haitian Heritage Month in May, the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum will host the Haitian Community Arts: Images by Iris PhotoCollective exhibit on loan from the Historical Museum of Southern Florida from April 7 through June 30, 2008.

The Haitian Community Arts exhibit consists of 38 photographs of Haitian artists practicing their traditional skills and the aesthetic products of these skills. Award-winning photographers Carl Juste, Pablo Martinez Monsivais and Andre Chung of the Iris PhotoCollective captured the images.

Curator for Community Research Dr. Joanne Hyppolite along with fieldworkers from the Historical Museum of South Florida and photographers from the IRIS PhotoCollective set out to document the expressive traditions of Haitians living in South Florida. No small task since, according the 2000 U.S. Census figures, the Haitian presence in South Florida represents more than 50 percent of the Haitian population in the entire United States.

From their documentation the exhibition was created and provides a rare view into the artistic, festive and religious traditions in South Florida including fè koupe (steel drum sculpture), woodcarving, sewing, baking, drumming, dancing, singing, poetry, kite-making and children’s games. One of the exhibition goals is to show how everyday photographs often invoke more questions than seek to define a moment.

"As an organization dedicated to communicating the rich cultural diversity of our community, we are proud to welcome an exhibit that provides a window into such an amazing culture which is rapidly becoming a part of our future and history," said Brandy Brownlee, museum educator of the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum.

			<title>VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - HANDS ON DAY 2008</title>
			<link>http://palmbeachcounty.mhsoftware.com/ViewItem.html?cal_item_id=69&amp;dtwhen=2454604</link>
<description>VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO IMPACT COMMUNITY THROUGH HANDS ON DAY 2008

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., May 2, 2008 – Hands On, a volunteer program of United Way of Palm Beach County, is looking for volunteers to be part of the Eighth Annual "Hands On Day" on Saturday, May 17 from 7:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Volunteers can choose from eight service projects that will be held at various area nonprofits. The projects involve painting, picking-up trash, landscaping and food sorting. All service projects fit into one of United Way of Palm Beach County’s Impact Areas.
“Hands On Day” is held once a year. On that day, Hands On volunteers (including adults, teens, and families), corporate volunteers and many other volunteers from the community complete a service project in one day. After the work is completed, volunteers are treated to a celebratory picnic. Music, T-shirts and prizes are awarded to Hands On volunteers. This year’s celebration will be held at John Prince Park in Lake Worth.
The 8 listed service projects are:
1. The Salvation Army, West Palm Beach – Volunteers will paint the interior of the lobby and halls. This location provides after school programs, sports activities and Friday movie nights. It also provides a time for seniors to get together for social time.

2. Paint Your Heart Out Palm Beach County (two locations - Lake Worth and West Palm Beach) - Volunteers will be painting two homes. Paint Your Heart Out is a program of the Solid Waste Authority that uses recycled paint to paint the homes of elderly, disabled residents and low-income residents of Palm Beach County.

3. Unity for Kids, West Palm Beach – Volunteers will mulch the playground, paint interior doors and paint the exterior of the entire building. This location is a pre-school with and without special needs, ages 2-13.

4. Opportunity, Inc., West Palm Beach – Volunteers will rake, mulch, trim trees and hedges, and conduct “general clean up” of the grounds. Opportunity, Inc. offers low cost, quality pre-school child care, educational programming and support to low-income families and families-in-crisis.

5. South Florida Science Museum, West Palm Beach - Volunteers are needed to mulch the outdoor science trail (6 ft. wide). Volunteers will use pitch forks, rakes, and wheelbarrows. The South Florida Science Museum excites curiosity and furthers the understanding of, and appreciation of, science and technology.

6. Daily Bread Food Bank, West Palm Beach – Volunteers are needed to help sort food from large containers and separate dry food from canned food. The food is then distributed to nonprofit organizations that feed the hungry in Palm Beach County.

7. John Prince Park, Lake Worth - Volunteers are needed to help clean up litter and debris so this park can be clean and safe, for families to enjoy!
