DESCRIPTION:“A Christmas Carol”\nAT THE ATLANTIC THEATER IN JUPITER\n\nTHE
CHARLES DICKENS CLASSIC RETURNS \nFOR THE FIFTH YEAR: DECEMBER 12TH – 14TH
\n \n(Jupiter\, Fl) The Atlantic Theater is pleased to bring back Char
les Dickens’ classic holiday tale\, “A Christmas Carol” for a fifth holida
y season. The classic tale is of an embittered and greedy Ebenezer Scroog
e who realizes\, through the redeeming visits of three spirits\, that a me
aningful life is filled with generosity\, compassion\, and love shared wit
h family and friends. The play takes place on Friday December 12 at 8pm\,
  Saturday December 13th at 3pm and 8pm and Sunday December 14th at 2pm. \
nEbenezer Scrooge learns the meaning of Christmas after four ghosts guide
him through his emotionally charged past\, loveless present\, and his blea
k future. The vision of his own realization that no one will mourn his de
ath force Scrooge out of his “Bah Humbug” ways and give him a renewed outl
ook towards humanity. \nThis will mark the fifth year that the theater h
as presented “A Christmas Carol”\, as the play was the first ever presente
d in the inaugural season in 2003 and has been a hit with audiences ever s
ince. \nAppearing as Ebeneezer Scrooge will be Frank Licari\, a stage v
eteran of New York theater for over 10 years\, and a former member of the
Obie award winning Blue Man Group. The professional cast is rounded out b
y the Atlantic Theater’s performance company\, along with special guests\,
the Atlantic Arts Acting Company\, appearing as the children in the play.
The play also contains spirited dance numbers presented by the Atlantic D
ance Theater to highlight Scrooge’s dreams.\nTickets for the show are $17

DESCRIPTION:American Orchid Society Expands Its Jungle Gardens with Rare Bo
 tanical Delights\; New Phase to Open October 25\n \nDelray Beach\, Fla. –
Sept. 15\, 2008 – Visitors to the American Orchid Society’s botanical gard
en will be able to stroll along a tree-l ined path to the property’s lake\
, as part of an expansion that is scheduled to open October 25\, 2008.\n \
nDubbed Lake Huntington Walk\, the half-acre addition will have a walking
path that loops down to Lake Huntington and past about 40 exotic new trees
\, fresh shrubs and a beautiful display of new heliconias\, bromeliads and
orchids.\n \n“Everything we put back there is either rare or very special
\,” said Nicholas Ewy\, director of the AOS greenhouse and gardens\, which
  cover 3.5 acres. “It’s the largest expansion we’ve done.”\n \nThe new are
a features trees donated by two local nurseries\, many of which were alrea
dy mature. So while the garden itself is newly established\, many of the t
rees will look like they’ve been there for years.\n \n“Thankfully a lot of
the trees we have acquired have been large\, 15- to 20- foot trees\,” sai
d Ewy\, who is in charge of the expansion . “There are some well-grown spe
cimens.”\n \nThe largest donation\, worth about $15\,000\, came from South
east Growers Inc. in exchange for a few trees and other plant material fro
m the AOS gardens. Among the acquisitions from Southeast are the Cashew\,
a South American tree that produces an odd-looking fruit that contains the
cashew nut\; the Balsa\, a tree from Central and South America whose ligh
tweight wood is often used for model building\; and the Looking Glass Tree
\, an African coastal tree that forms beautiful\, sinuous buttresses with
age and has leaves with a silvery white underside that reflects sunlight.\
 n \nAlso featured is the Wallichia distichia\, a unique-looking palm from
Asia\, whose leaves grow in a flat plane rather than encircling the trunk
like most palm trees. From J.E.M. Orchids\, a nearby nursery that recently
closed\, AOS received a number of trees\, including the Calabash\, which
is a perfect host for orchids and other epiphytes\, and the Sapodilla\, wh
ose sap was the original source of chewing gum.\n \nWhile Ewy has installe
d mulch0Aand gravel paths throughout the new garden\, he said he hopes to
find a donor to cover the cost of paving the paths with bricks or concrete
.\n \nThe new expansion is an extension of the Jungle Garden\, Ewy said\,
but it warranted its own name.\n \n“Lake Huntington Walk seemed most fitti
 ng\,” he said.\n \nABOUT THE AMERICAN ORCHID SOCIETY: \nWith nearly 18\,00
0 members around the world\, the AOS is recognized as a leader in orchid e
ducation\, research\, and conservation. It is the largest special-interes
t horticultural organization in the world. The AOS Visitors Center and Bot
anical Garden has also become a popular site for corporate meetings and sp
ecial events\, such as weddings and private parties. \n \nThe AOS facility
and gardens are open to the public daily from 10am until 4:30pm. Admissio
ns are $10 for adults and free for children under 12. Seniors 65 and older
receive $1 off regular admission. The AOS Botanical Garden is located at
 16700 AOS Lane\, Delray Beach\, FL 33446. For more information\, please
 call 561-404-2000 or visit www.aos.org.

DESCRIPTION:AVDA INVITES THE WHOLE FAMILY TO THE KICK-OFF 5K OF THE SOFLA R
UNNING SEASON\nAnnual South Florida Fitness Fundraiser on Oct. 11 Supports
  Domestic Abuse Programs and Outreach\n \nDelray Beach\, FL – September 20
08 – AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Violence\, Inc.) of Delray Beach wil
l help kick-off the South Florida “running season” with its 5K Run/Walk 20
08 on October 11. The race begins at 7:30 a.m.\n \nHeld in Anchor Park in
Delray Beach\, which borders beaches along the Atlantic Ocean\, the scenic
event attracted more than 500 participants\, volunteers and supporters la
st year for a day of fitness and fun. 2007’s 5K raised a record $70\,000 f
or domestic abuse programs and outreach to survivors. \n \nTruly a family
 occasion\, the 2008 5K Run/Walk will include a Family Fun Mile=2 0Race and
a Kids’ Race for children 6 and under. Tim Byrd “The Byrdman” of KOOL 105
.5 will serve as MC and honorary chair.\n \n“It is a family fun morning\,”
said Pam O’Brien\, executive director of AVDA. “We try to make it as exci
ting and upbeat as possible with Ronald McDonald\, children’s activities a
nd lots of smiles. Everyone has such a good time\, and it’s a beautiful co
urse to run along A1A”\n \nTo register\, visit www.avdaonline.org and clic
k on the “5K” link\, or call the Race Coordinator at 561-265-3797\, ext. 1
18.\n \nO’ Brien notes that nine years ago\, this event – then called a wa
lk-a-thon – began with 16 people\, who wanted to raise awareness about AVD
 A. Many of the original walkers were present last year. She credits Diane
Hoffman\, an AVDA board member\, with transforming the event into what it
is today. A survivor of domestic violence\, Hoffman of Delray Beach\, inti
mately understands what it means to believe in oneself enough to finish a
5K and possibly begin a new life. Hoffman introduced the standard elements
  of a real race – initially\, a timed course\, advertising and sponsorship
s\; then\, a certified course with chip timing and more volunteers. Then\,
20she reached out to the running clubs.\n \n“We made this a good race. Wha
t’s more pleasant than running alongside the ocean? We have to have lots o
f support and lots of foods and prizes to make it a good day\,” Hoffman sa
 id. \n \nAVDA’s 5K Run/Walk 2008 is sponsored by Woolbright Development Co
rporation\, Anne and Peter Vesgo\, Tammy and Greg Babij\, The Palm Beach P
ost\, St. Paul Episcopal of Delray Beach\, CorpSource Solutions (of Boca R
aton)\, Royal Palm Properties\, the Daughters of Penelope Leda Chapter 59\

nton/Linton Real Estate (of Delray Beach)\, Ocean City Properties and the

at has been providing support to survivors of domestic violence for the pa
 st 20 years. Emergency shelter\, a 24-hour hotline\, transitional housing\
, legal advocacy\, and counseling are some of the services offered to adul

2\, 2009 at the Royal Palm Yacht Club\, 2425 Maya Palm Drive West in Boca
Raton.\n \nThe “Heart of a Woman” luncheon was created to help involve the
community in supporting women who are re-building their lives and the liv
es of their children following domestic abuse. The positive\, upbeat event
  will complement AVDA’s 5K Run/Walk\, held in October\, which raised $50\,
000 this year.\nEvent co-chairwomen Ann Bennett and Barbara Murphy\, both
of Gulf Stream\, are planning on the popularity of Sheehy’s books and colu
mns\, along with her message of empowerment\, to attract new faces to AVDA
’s event. \n“Gail is such a wonderfully smart and gifted author\, whom man
 y people identify with through her work\, Passages\,” said Murphy\, a pers
onal friend of Sheehy’s\, who orchestrated her appearance. A Library of Co
ngress survey named Passages one of the 10 most influential books of its t
ime. Sheehy is a seven-time recipient of the New York Newswomen’s Club Fro
nt Page Award for distinguished journalism.\nThe event will begin with a r
eception and silent auction at 11 a.m. The luncheon will be served at noon
. Tickets are $100\; tables of 10 are available. All proceeds raised from
this event will go directly to supporting shelter\, transitional housing\,
educational and counseling programs offered to victims and their families
.\nAVDA is a nonprofit organization that has been providing support to sur
vivors of domestic violence for the past 20 years. Emergency shelter\, a 2
 4-hour hotline\, transitional housing\, legal advocacy\, and counseling ar
e some of the services offered to adult and child survivors of domestic vi
olence. For more information\, call (561) 265-3797 or visit www.avdaonline

DESCRIPTION:Flagler Museum Presents a Special Lecture \n BARNUM: America's
Greatest Showman\n\nPalm Beach\, FL - The Flagler Museum welcomes author P
 hilip B. Kunhardt III for a special lecture\, BARNUM: America's Greatest S
howman\, on January 4\, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. Kunhardt will discuss the genius
and vision of the unmatched impresario and entrepreneur\, P.T. Barnum. Ti
ckets are $5 for Museum Members and $20 for non-members\, which include Fl
agler Museum admission. A book signing and reception follows the lecture.
\n\nKunhardt describes Barnum as a man of complex motives\, a master of me
rchandise. He was an inveterate self-promoter often reviled for his opport
unism. Kunhardt will also dispel myths about Barnum\, who did not say "The
re's a sucker born every minute." \n\nP.T. Barnum was a brilliant business
men who had unbelievable perseverance\, and a keen understanding of what w
ould excite people's interest. Perhaps his greatest talent was his ability
to package and promote entertainment. From humble beginnings\, he struggl
ed to become an entertainment mogul\, and is now immortalized by the circu
s that bears his name. Barnum's ingenuity won out as he overcame the logis
tical nightmare of moving a large circus throughout the world\, when there
were no automobiles or tractor trailers. \n\nBarnum built his reputation\
, and his fortune\, largely on the exoticism of others\, but his crowning
moment may have come as a member of the Connecticut state legislature. The
two-term congressmen spoke in favor of a constitutional amendment to abol
ish slavery: "A human soul is not to be trifled with. It may inhabit the b
ody of a Chinaman\, a Turk\, an Arab or a Hotentot - it is still an immort
al spirit!"\n\nThere is no denying Barnum's abiding influence\, more than
a century after his death\, on American popular culture. For better and wo
rse\, Americans owe their irrepressible infatuation with show biz largely
to Barnum. \n***\nWhen it was completed in 1902\, Whitehall\, Henry Flagle
r's Gilded Age estate in Palm Beach\, was hailed by the New York Herald a
s "more wonderful than any palace in Europe\, grander and more magnificent
than any other private dwelling in the world." Today\, Whitehall is a Nat
ional Historic Landmark and is open to the public as the Flagler Museum\,
featuring guided tours\, changing exhibits\, and special programs. The Mus
eum is located at Cocoanut Row and Whitehall Way\, Palm Beach. The Museum
 is open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.\, Tuesday through Saturday\, and n
oon until 5:00 p.m.\, Sunday. Admission is $15 for adults\, $8 for youth
ages 13-18\, $3 for children ages 6-12\, and children under six are free.\

DESCRIPTION:(Palm Beach\, FL) - Two renowned Bluegrass groups\, Dailey & Vi
ncent and Grasstowne\, will headline the Flagler Museum's Fourth Annual Bl
uegrass in The Pavilion Concert on April 18\, 2009\, at 3:30 p.m. Tickets
are $30 and all proceeds benefit the Southern Arts Federation's emergency
planning for cultural institutions. Bluegrass fans are sure to enjoy this
one-of-a-kind bluegrass concert at the Flagler Museum.\n\nThe Flagler Muse
um continues to bring bluegrass' best musicians to south Florida. Dailey &
Vincent make their debut on the Pavilion stage after winning an unprecede
nted seven trophies at the 2008 International Bluegrass Music Awards Show\
, including Entertainer\, Vocal Group\, Emerging Artist and Gospel Recorde
d Performance of the Year (for "By the Mark"). Their self-titled debut CD
on Rounder Records went straight to the top of the Billboard bluegrass cha
rts\, where it remained for 35 weeks. \n\nJamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent
are long-time veterans of the professional bluegrass scene having some twe
nty years experience between the two of them from long tenures with bluegr
ass and country legends Doyle Lawson and Ricky Skaggs. This powerful new d
uo is steeped in bluegrass and country music traditions. Jamie Dailey and
Darrin Vincent have devoted their lives to bluegrass\, to both the traditi
ons and the possibilities that it offers\, and now fans in South Florida w
ill hear the most sensational Bluegrass band around. \n\nThe renowned Gras
stowne will play at this year's event with renditions of great American cl
assics\, and favorites. Grasstowne is nominated for an unprecedented 10 aw
ards from the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (
SPBGMA) including Bluegrass Band of the Year. Group member Steve Gulley wa
s already honored with the 2008 Song of the Year award from the Internati
onal Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) for "Through The Window Of A Train
." The band is comprised of three very well respected veterans in bluegras
s and acoustic music. Phil Leadbetter and Steve Gulley have known each ot
her since the mid-1970s when they performed in local bands in the Knoxvill
e\, Tennessee area while in their teens. Their paths soon crossed with ma
ndolin ace Alan Bibey. Now\, 30 years later\, all three men are partners i
n the acoustic band Grasstowne! Add to the mix two young and very talente
d players\; Jason Davis on banjo and Travis Greer on upright bass\, and yo
u have the hottest bluegrass band on tour today.
